Answer:

Monsoons in India arrive at the southern tip of the Indian peninsula by first week of June and then proceeds to Arabian sea branch and Bay of Bengal branch.

a. Arabian sea Branch- The south west monsoon arrives on the Southern part of the Peninsula in early June and reaches Bombay around June 10, bringing cooler but relatively humid weather.

b. Bay of Bengal Branch- The southwest monsoon which moves northward in the Bay of Bengal arriving in Assam by first week of June. Due to the Great Himalayan Range which acts as natural barriers to these winds, they deflect westward along Ganga Plains moving towards New Delhi. These two branches merge as a single current bringing rains to the remaining parts of North India in July.

c. The onset of monsoon is more rapid, retreat rather is more gradual.

d. The reasons for the onset and advancement of monsoons can be attributed to the following:

i. Shifting of ITCZ- In advancing monsoon, the trough and its axis keeps on moving northward or southward, which

determines the spatial distribution of rainfall, for example, When the axis of the monsoon trough lies over

the plains, rainfall is good in these parts.

ii. Different pressure condition- For advancing monsoon low pressure conditions develop over northern plains which attracts trade winds of the southern hemisphere.

iii. Movement of winds- During the onset of monsoon we witness origination of south east trade winds over the warm subtropical areas of southern oceans, they blow in the south westerly direction.
