● In 1774 , Louis XVI of the Bourbon family of kings ascended the throne of France. He married to the Austrian princess Marie Antoinette.
● The treasury was empty , so the king was forced to increase the taxes to meet the regular expenses.
● French Society in the eighteenth century was divided into three estates i.e. Clergy , Nobility and the third estate comprises less prosperous section of society.
● Only the members of third estates had to pay taxes to the state , nobles and clergy.
