FACTORS AFFECTING KERALA’S AGRICULTURE

There is abundance of water in Kerala due to 34 lakes, other small streamlets, innumerable backwaters,waterbodies and 49 rain-fed rivers flowing over the terrain of the state.Also the adequate rainfall of 118 inch has received by the state probably facilitates agriculture to a great extent and hence the economy of the state is dominated by agriculture.

KERALA AND AGRICULTURAL CROPS

The most essential or the staple crop is the rice or paddy.About 600 varieties of rice are grown in the sprawling paddy fields of Kerala.In fact the Kuttanad Region of the western district of Aleppey of Kerala is known as the ‘rice bowl of the state’ and enjoys a significant position in the production of rice.

Next to rice is another very important crop which is Tapioca and is cultivated mainly in dry and humid regions.Tapioca is major staple food of Keralites

Besides production of main and staple crops.Kerala is also a major producer of spices that form the cash crops of the state.Kerala’s spice trade overseas started about 300 years ago from the Colonial Age.Kerala spices are well known for its fresh aroma,which lured the foreign traders into our country in medieval age.Kerala produces 96% of country’s national output of pepper.The important spices are cardamom,cinnamon,clove,turmeric,nutmeg and vanilla which is predominantly grown in eastern part of state.Cardamom is exported in huge number and brings a great revenue to the state.

Other cash crops consistituting the agriculture sector comprises of tea,coffee,cashew,coconut,arecanut and ginger.In fact,coconut provides the principle source of income in Kerala-from coir industry to coconut shell artifacts;coconuts brings the most of the economic gains to Kerala.Approximately,Kerala gives about 70% of the Indian output of coconuts
