Answers
Answer:
Simile-a figure of speech involving the comparison of one thing with another thing of a different kind, used to make a description more emphatic or vivid. An example of a simile is: She is as innocent as an angel and another one is "He is as brave as lion"
Metaphor-a figure of speech in which a word or phrase is applied to an object or action to which it is not literally applicable. Here's a metaphor example: "The curtain of night fell upon us".
Alliteration- The occurrence of the same letter or sound at the beginning of adjacent or closely connected words. A classic example is: "She sells seashells by the sea-shore." Another is: "Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers."
Antimetabole-In rhetoric, antimetabole is the repetition of words in successive clauses, but in transposed order; for example, "I know what I like, and I like what I know". It is related to, and sometimes considered a special case of, chiasmus.
Antithesis-Antithesis is used in writing or speech either as a proposition that contrasts with or reverses some previously mentioned proposition, or when two opposites are introduced together for contrasting effect. This is based on the logical phrase or term. Ex:
"Man proposes, God disposes." - Source unknown; "Love is an ideal thing, marriage a real thing." - Goethe; "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." - Neil Armstrong; "To err is human; to forgive divine." - Alexander Pope.
Assonance-Resemblance of sound between syllables of nearby words, arising particularly from the rhyming of two or more stressed vowels, but not consonants (e.g. sonnet, porridge ), but also from the use of identical consonants with different vowels (e.g. killed, cold, culled ).
Hyperbole-Exaggerated statements or claims not meant to be taken literally.Ex:I've told you to clean your room a million times!
Metonymy-The substitution of the name of an attribute or adjunct for that of the thing meant, for example suit for the business executive, or the turf for horse racing.
