Currently, there are algae plants where these natural oils are harvested in “raceways.” The natural oils from the algae is then harvested via sound-waves or solvents and used as biofuels (Energy 101). (Biofuels are just energy mainly in the form of oil from plants! Most biofuels are made from palm oil and soy and can be directly converted into energy through combustion.) According to the Department of Energy, algae could produce up to 60 times more oil per acre than land-based plants (Energy 101). This energy can be incorporated today and burned in cars allowing for no real technology needed to incorporate the alternative energy source. Algae is also used to produce other materials such as fertilizer and pet food, making it a multi-use material (APECSEC)

Another benefit to algae energy is that it needs carbon dioxide to grow. This means that we can reduce the amount of carbon in the air while creating energy through algae. Even though this carbon dioxide stored in the algae would be expelled when burned, there is no addition of carbon in the atmosphere with biofuels unlike fossil fuels. Overall algae energy is safe for the environment.

Algae can also be grown anywhere! There are over 100,000 different strains of algae known in the world today that thrive in different conditions (Energy 101). Research still needs to be done to determine which algae would be best for producing energy. However, because algae can be grown anywhere, this allows for small islands to start producing their own energy as long as they have the resources to do so. Algae can even be produced in wastewater! Scientists at Rice University state that growing algae in wastewater can reduce 90% of the nitrates and over 50% of phosphorous from the water, which also helps the environment (FUTURITY)

Like most alternative energy, algae biofuel is very expensive to produce. Algae also can be very temperamental if not treated correctly costing the company or agency even more money. Here is a great debate on the pros and cons of biofuel from a UK radio station.

Mankind must come up with creative ways to produce energy as we make transitions from fossil fuel energy in the future. One of the best ways to create energy is to harness it from nature without disturbing nature and it’s processes. Perhaps the answer to the world’s global power problem can be found in the oceans.

Tidal energy is very similar to general hydropower in that they both use flowing water to harness energy. The first technology is called tidal barrages. Sluice gates on the barrage allow the tidal basin to fill on the incoming high tides and allows the tidal basin to empty through the turbine system on the outgoing ebb tide.2 These tidal barrages are very similar to hydropower dams. One of the major disadvantages of tidal barrages is its negative effect on the environment.

One of the biggest pros of tidal power is its renewability factor. There will always be tides as long as we have a moon, which means there will always be tidal energy, unless of course, an asteroid runs into the moon and ruins that. However, knock on wood, there is a very slight chance of that happening.

Along with it’s renewability factor, tidal is a very consistent source of energy. Scientist can study the tides and know when energy production will be the greatest. Tidal energy is very efficient as it converts almost 80 percent of its power to electricity, as against oil and coal that only convert 30 percent of the power held in.3

There is also a low maintenance cost and no pollution effects from the source.

However, it is very expensive to replace these tidal sources in chance of breakdown or destruction from powerful storms. There is also a high installation cost due to the unpopularity of the source. However, with more use of the oceans in future years, this price tag should be reduced.

Another major drawback from tidal energy is the affect it has on marine life. In any type of tidal source, there is a negative impact on marine life due to the disruption of the natural ocean process. However, more research is being done to reduce the impact this source has on the environment.

Tidal energy is expected to increase in use by 2020. Countries with suitable access
