  • A Noun is a naming word.It can be the name of a person, place,animal,thing or it also can be a quality.
  • Examples of Noun :- Roman(name),Mumbai(place),Elephant(Animal),Knife(Thing).
  • Types of Noun :- Proper Noun, Common Noun, Collective noun,Material noun and Abstract noun

  • A Proper noun is the name of a particular person,place,animal or thing.Example :- India(country),Sujeet(Name),New Delhi(city),Bee(insect).
  • The point that should be remember is that " If two proper nouns having a certain quality in common is compared and article is placed before the proper noun to which something is being compared".As for example :- Kashmir is the Switzerland of India.Here,Kashmir has been compared to Switzerland.Hence, article "the" is used before Switzerland.

  • A Common noun is is a common name given to all persons, places, animals are the things of same class or kind.Example :- boy, flower,child, lion,etc.
  • Types of Common Noun :- Countable nouns (nouns that can be counted) and Uncountable nouns(noun that can't be counted) .

  • A Collective noun is the name given to a group or collection of persons,animals or things considered as one complete whole.
  • Example:-Class,team,army,crowd,fleet,etc.

  • A Material noun is the name of a substance of which something is made.Example :- copper,clay,iron,gold, silver, etc.
  • Materials nouns do not have any plural form.However, material noun is used as a common noun an article can be used before it.For example :-
  1. Water has no colour.(Material Noun)
  2. The water of this well is potable.(Common noun).

  • An Abstract noun is the name of a quality, condition,state, thought or feeling etc.Abstract noun can either be seen nor touched; it can only be felt.
  • For example:- Kindness,Love,honesty,mercy,hatred,etc.
  • No article is use before an abstract noun.For example :- Honesty is the best policy.
