Rabindranath Tagore, in his poem freedom talks about how he yearns freedom for his “motherland” He believes that true freedom is attained when there is no fear (this was something Tagore believed in very strongly see Where the Mind is Without Fear for instance)

Next, Tagore likens our country to a weary old woman and calls for “Freedom from the burden of the ages” By this, he means that the burden of years and years of colonialism has taxed India and now it resembles a tired old woman who is blind to “the calls of future” which perhaps refers to a sense of hopelessness that was looming at that point of time with regard to India’s future.

Tagore further explains that India is now stuck in this rut of colonialism, and rather than looking forward to it’s bright future it remains motionless as if it is bound by “the shackles of slumber” Tagore compares the darkness and night to the era of colonialism, devoid of light and blinding.

“Freedom from the anarchy of destiny, whole sails are weakly yielded to the blind uncertain winds” Here, Tagore states that the response to colonialism is completely passive, it’s as if a ship is being steered by random winds and there’s no one to control or maneuver it. So, this is a metaphor, the poet is comparing India to a directionless ship. He feels that the helm, if controlled is being driven by a “cold hand” cold here means detached, the colonial rulers were least bothered by India and it’s progress.

Tagore further states that living under alien rule is like living in a puppet world, where all Indians are puppets whose strings are being pulled by the colonial rulers, the puppeteers. Hefurther goes on with this analogy and states that obedience is now a mindless habit and we wait for our “masters” the British Raj to give commands which we readily follow.

I hope this helped :)
