In chemistry, a lone pair refers to a pair of valence electrons that are not shared with another atom in a covalent bond and is sometimes called an unshared pair or non-bonding pair. Lone pairs are found in the outermost electron shell of atoms. They can be identified by using a Lewis structure.

In chemistry, a lone pair refers to a pair of valence electrons that are not shared with another atom in a covalent bond and is sometimes called an unshared pair or non-bonding pair. Lone pairs are found in the outermost electron shell of atoms. They can be identified by using a Lewis structure. There are 2 electrons in a lone pair. Two atoms share one electron each to form a covalent bond.  The electron pairs left in the valence shell without forming the bond are known as lone pairs of electrons. For example, ammonia molecule has one lone pair of electrons and water molecule has two lone pairs of electrons.
