The main constituent of a base is oxygen or hydroxide ion. For example Sodium hydroxide(NaOH).Bases turn red litmus blue.

1st concept is Arhennius concept which said that acid is a substance that gives h+ions in aqueous solution and base is a substance that gives oh -ions in aqueous solution
