The exchange of bicarbonate ions and chloride ions across the membrane of RBC in the tissue is know as chloride shift or hamburger phenomenon.

1) when carbon dioxide enters the RBC from the tissues by simple diffusion, it reacts with water in the presence of carbonic anhydrase resulting in the formation of carbonic acid.

2) carbonic acid breaks down into hydrogen and bicarbonate ions.

3) bicarbonate ions cross the RBC membrane by simple diffusion.
