Sir Stephen Harold Spender (1909 - 1995) was an English poet, novelist and essayist.
The poem 'My Parents' is about the poet's protected childhood.
His parents warned him against the rough and uncouth boys of the neighbourhood. But he chose to ignore these warnings, even though he was often bullied and made fun of by these boys, which was made worse because of the lisp he had. Perhaps he had an admiration for them, and the way they lived?
The poet wished to forgive the boys, but they chose to be rough with him and never even 'smiled'.
