express 15/4 + 5/40 as decimals without actual division

15/4 + 5/40

Rules in adding fractions:
1) Make sure that the fractions have the least common denominator. 
4 and 40 have 40 as the least common denominator. Multiply the fraction by a number that will result to the least common denominator.

15/4 * 10/10 = 150/40

2) add the numerators and place the sum above the least common denominator.
150/40 + 5/40 = 155/40

3) simplify fraction. 155/40 is an improper fraction. To simplify it, it must be converted into a mixed fraction.

155/40 = 3 35/40 or 3 7/8 or 3.875
