You use a “greedy algorithm”. At each stage, choose the biggest unit fraction that doesn’t exceed the remaining number. So you have 7/9 and the biggest unit fraction you can use is 1/2.

7/9 - 1/2 = 5/18. That’s less than 1/3 so use 1/4.

5/18 - 1/4 = 1/36. Excellent, the remainder is now itself a unit fraction so we have a solution.
