it's equal to 1, now you can write it ( sin^2 theta + cos^2 theta )^2

sec^2 theta - tan^2theta is a perfect square if its square root has a whole number.
sec^2 theta - tan^2theta
=1/cos^2theta -sin^2theta/cos^2theta
=1-sin^2theta/cos^2theta
(But, 1-sin^2theta = cos ^2theta .)
= cos^2theta/cos^2theta =1.
square of (sec^2 theta - tan^2theta) = square roor(1) = 1, which is a perfect square.
Hence proved that it is a perfect square.
