Consumer awareness in India is low because of a number of reasons:
1. Low literacy levels- When the consumers are not educated, they will not know how to judge a product. They will consider it only in superficial ways. For example, one cannot expect a labourer to understand the nutritional values of two different food products.
2. Limited access to information- Many people, even if they are educated, do not know how to find out details about products or services. For example, they are unaware of how to check or whom to ask if a particular product contains any harmful ingredients or not.
3. Poor law enforcement- Companies do not provide true information about its product. There are a lot of fake products available too. Also, the government authorities do not take strict action against those indulging in dishonest practices. Thus, the real information does not reach the people.
4. Money based mindset- Many people in India cannot afford good quality products because of poverty. However, even those who have the ability to spend, often look at only the price tag, without considering the other aspects like durability or warranty period included.
It is reasons like these that make the average Indian an individual who lacks consumer awareness.
