My parents were going away for the weekend.
So, I had a sleepover at my best friends house.
We had many sleepovers before, but this one was different.
During the day, we would play video games and watch TV.
Just like we normally did.
However, we didn't talk as much as usual.
We both knew that my life was about to change dramatically.
I was slowly going blind due to Retinitis Pigmentosa.
Everything was fading away and a blanket of darkness was starting to form over my vision.
The doctors had warned that my sight wouldn't last much longer.
We were both very upset by this, although we tried to hide our sadness.
I had also lost my appetite due to stress and didn't feel hungry for dinner.
During the evening, we would watch the sunset together out the window.
I just wondered how many more sunsets I would be able to see.
It was late Sunday night and we were laying in bed.
My friend was asleep but I was still laying there awake.
It was rainy and stormy outside, this didn't make me feel any better.
I also couldn't see anything since I was already fully night blind.
I was laying awake scared by the weather, the darkness and my impending blindness.
Finally, I couldn't take it anymore and woke up my friend.
The emotions welled up and I was just crying.
I didn't want to go blind and live in complete darkness forever.
My friend promised me that it would all be okay.
Blindness wouldn't ruin our friendship and he would always be there for me.
He was a true friend and still cared for me despite my disability.
Over the next few months, I slowly lost my vision and became totally blind.
I was badly bullied and most kids didn't want to be my friend anymore.
However, my best friend stood by me and helped me cope with going blind.
It was the worst thing that ever happened to me.
I don't think I could have gotten through it without him.
These days I'm a motivational speaker.
