Many of us do not know that Father of Nation Mahatma Gandhi once addressed Jawaharlal Nehru as ‘Trojan’ after he led and mobilize villagers on several occasions during Salt Satyagrah. Later, when he was arrested and jailed in the process 1930, Gandhi wrote a letter to Motilal Nehru, saying Jawahar needed this ‘rest’.

As per legend, Trojan War was waged against the city of Troy by Greeks. The Trojan horse was a large wooden horse that the Greeks used to take soldiers secretly into the city of Troy in order to destroy it.

Nehru was an office-bearer of All India Congress Committee, when he was arrested on 14 April, 1930 while on way from Allahabad to Raipur. Mahatma Gandhi was impressed by the way he addressed a huge meeting and led a vast procession which ceremoniously manufactured salt.

The British charged him with breach of the salt law and sentenced him to six months of imprisonment at Central Jail.

After it, Gandhi wrote to Motilal Nehru, “So, Jawahar is to have six month’s rest. He has worked like a Trojan. He needed this rest. If things continue to move with this present velocity, he won’t have even six months of rest. The Jawahar you saw the other day is different today. Whole villages have turned out. I never expected this phenomenal response. He will be a wise man, who can say what will happen tomorrow.”

The letter dated April 14, 1930 has been kept for display at Allahabad Museum.

The records at Regional Archive Office show that with the arrest of Nehru and other prominent leaders, the civil disobedience movement gained momentum. It was followed by arrests of freedom fighters and firing on crowds by police.

Nehru considered Salt Satyagraha as the high mark of his association with Gandhi. Later, the British and world opinion began to recognise the legitimacy of claims by Congress Party for Independence.
