External Fertilization is commonly seen in aquatic animals, for example, fish and frogs. The eggs are released (spawned) by females in the water where they are fertilised by the sperms released by the males.
Amphibians like frogs and toads shift from land to water bodies like ponds and streams during rainy season. When the male and the female come together, the female lays hundreds of eggs. These eggs are covered with a jelly-like substance to protect them. The male deposits the sperms directly over these eggs. The sperms have a long tail which helps them to swim in water and fertilize the eggs. Since the fusion of the chemists take place outside the body of the female, it is called external fertilization.
