Night Theme Essay
When someone experiences pain or loss boundless times, they become desensitized and lose their emotions and conscience. In the book “Night” by Elie Weisel, Elie shows this from the beginning of the book to the end.
One scene from the book that shows this is in chapter 3 after his mother and little sister go to the crematory when he finds out that they have died Elie says, “Never shall I forget these things, even if I am condemned to live as long as God Himself. Never.”. This quote shows that Elie still has emotions and feels the loss of his family's death.
A second scene that shows that Elie is becoming desensitized is in chapter 6 when Elie and his father have to crush and bash their way through other fellow prisoners in order to enter the barracks, he doesn’t show any pain at doing it he was just trying to survive.
The last scene in which Elie shows he has become desensitized is in chapter 8, Elie's father is taken to the crematory while Elie was asleep. Before his death, his father was being a large burden on Elie because his father had become very weak and can’t do much. So, when his father dies Elie feels as though a weight has been lifted and doesn't feel very much loss. This shows that Elie has become desensitized since the beginning of the book.
At the beginning of the book Elie feels loss at the death of his mother and sister yet at the end of the book he feels as though a weight has been lifted when his father dies, this shows that he has become desensitized and proves that when you experience loss boundless times you lose your emotions.
