Given :- Change the sentences into Indirect Speech.

Points To Remember :- Indirect/Reported Speech refers to a dialogue being told to a third person/reporting what happened to a third person.

Example :-

→ Mila said, "I'm organizing a party." (Direct)

→ Mila said that she was organizing a party. (Indirect)

In the above example, when writing in indirect/reported form, the sentence changes according to its tense. In place of comma we use "that" .

so,

1. I said to my sister, "Yesterday I bought a doll for you"

→ I told my sister that I had brought her a doll the day before .

2. He said, "This is the book I want”.

→ He said that that was the book he wanted .

3. The producer said to the actor, “ I don't have a role for you in this film.

→ The producer told the actor that he didn't have a role for him in that film .

4. I Said " I shall construct a house here".

→ I told that i would construct a house there .

  • He said that was the book he wanted

3. The producer said to the actor, “ I don't have a role for you in this film.  

  • The producer said to the actor that he didn't have a role for her in that film.

4. I Said, " I shall construct a house here".  

  • I said that I would construct a house there.

There are two kinds of speeches.  

1. Direct Speech:  

In Direct speech, we repeat the exact words by the speaker. Reporting speech is placed between inverted commas. For example, He said, " I have lost my pen".

2. Indirect Speech:  

In Indirect Speech, we repeat in our own words what is said by the speaker. generally, we use "said that" in this speech. For example, He said that he had lost his pen.

When we change direct speech to indirect speech:

present simple changed to past simple

present continuous changed to past continuous

present perfect changed to past perfect.

present perfect continuous changed to past perfect continuous

past simple change to past perfect

past continuous changed to past perfect continuous
