Answer:

1. Because it is an average. Though the exact temperature can vary, it should be around the 37 degree mark.

2. Laboratory thermometers are used to measure immediate temperatures and hence don't have a kink. Therefore, if we measure body temperature with it, as soon as it is taken out to read, the mercury will fall, giving an inaccurate reading.

3. Because clinical thermometer is used to measure body temperature, and the body temperature of a living human cannot dip below 35 degrees or rise above 42 degrees.

4. It is there to prevent back-flow of mercury so that the mercury level stays in place for long enough for the person to read.
