More Information:-

When we refer to the exact words as said by the speaker, we use the direct speech.

When we report of what somebody thought or said in our own words, we use the indirect speech.

Examples:-

Direct Speech:-

  • She said to me, 'What a skillful tailor he is!'
  • Unni said to Shivam, 'How will you go home?'
  • She said, 'The game board is mine.'

Indirect Speech:-

  • She exclaimed that he was a skillful tailor.
  • Unni asked Shivam how he would go home.
  • She said that the fame board is hers.

Changing Direct speech to Indirect speech:-

The verb should be changed to past tense.

Use reporting verbs such as said, thought, told, followed by that.

Remove the punctuations especially the inverted commas ('...')

Reporting verbs in sentences :-

Exclamatory Sentences: exclaimed.

Assertive Sentences: said, told, thought.

Interrogative Sentences: asked, demanded, enquired.
