Squaring on both sides

 \sf{(\: x -  \dfrac{1}{x})}^{2}   =  {9}^{2}

  \sf{x}^{2}  +  \dfrac{1}{ {x}^{2} }  - 2 = 81

  \sf{x}^{2}  +  \dfrac{1}{ {x}^{2} }  = 81 + 2 =  \red{83}

Therefore, x² + 1/x² = 83, the required answer.
