Concept
In mathematics function is a law that defines a relationship between two variables out of them one is the dependent and the other is the independent variable.
Given
F(x) = x3-5x2-7x+4
Find
1. F(1)
2. F(-2)
3. F(1/2)
Solution
1) F(1)
F(x) = x3-5x2-7x+4
Putting value of x = 1 in the function
F(1) = (1)3 – 5(1)2 – 7 +4
= 1 -5 -7 +4
= -7
2) F(-2)
F(x) = x3-5x2-7x+4
Putting value of x = -2 in the function
F(-2) = (-2)3 – 5(-2)2 – 7(-2) +4
= -8 -20 +14 +4
= -28+18
= -10
3) F(1/2)
F(x) = x3-5x2-7x+4
Putting value of x = 1/2 in the function
F(1/2) = (1/2)3 -5(1/2)2 – 7(1/2) +4
= (5-38)/8
= -33/8
The value of F(1) , F(-2) and F(1/2) is -7 , -10, -33/8 respectively.
