Let dimensions of a rectangular plot are x and y m By hypothesis 2(x+y)=48

or x+y=24 ...(i)

and xy=108 ...(ii)

From equation (i) y=24−x

Substituting the value of y in equation (ii) we get

x(24−x)=108

or 24x−x 2

=108

or x 2

−24x+108=0or x 2

−18x−6x+108=0

or x(x−18)−6(x−18)=0

or (x−18)−(x−6)=0

∴x=18 or x=6

if x=18 then y=24−18=6

and if x=6 then y=24−6=18

Hence the dimensions are 18m and 6m
