The history of Agriculture in India dates back to Indus Valley Civilization Era and even before that in some parts of Southern India.[1]India ranks second worldwide in farm outputs. Agriculture and allied sectors like forestry and fisheries accounted for 15.4% of the GDP(gross domestic product) in 2016 with about 31% of the workforce in 2014.[2][3][4] India ranks first globally with highest net cropped area followed by US and China.[5] The economic contribution of agriculture to India's GDP is steadily declining with the country's broad-based economic growth. Still, agriculture is demographically the broadest economic sector and plays a significant role in the overall socio-economic fabric of India.

India exported $38 billion worth of agricultural products in 2013, making it the seventh largest agricultural exporter worldwide and the sixth largest net exporter.[6] Most of its agriculture exports serve developing and least developed nations.[6] Indian agricultural/horticultural and processed foods are exported to more than 120 countries, primarily in the Middle East, Southeast Asia, SAARC countries, the EU and the United States.[7][8]

Agricultural enterprises which means crop or livestock deals with concepts such as labor supply, marketing, finances, natural resources, genetic stock, nutrition, equipment, and hazards. While it is possible to effectively manipulate each mechanism to result success farming individually, better results can often be obtained by treating the farming operation as a system. The interactions, then, among system components can become more important than how each component functions by itself. Treating production operations holistically offers greater management flexibility, provides for more environmentally and economically sound practices, and creates safer and healthier conditions for workers and for farm animals. These are the key functions of agriculture system.
