x² + 1/x² - 7x - 7/x + 8

= x² + 1/x² + 2 - 2 - 7 ( x + 1/x ) + 8

= ( x + 1/x )² - 7( x + 1/x ) + 6

Let x + 1/x = a ----( 1 )

= a² - 7a + 6

= a² - 6a - 1a + 6

= a( a - 6 ) - 1(a - 6 )

= ( a - 6 ) ( a - 1 )

= ( x + 1/x - 6 ) ( x + 1/x - 1 ) { from ( 1 ) ]
