Given 16 - x^2 - 2xy - y^2 can be written as

        =  16 - (x^2 + 2xy + y^2)

        = 16 - (x^2 + xy + xy + y^2)

        = 16 - (x(x + y)+y(x + y))

         =  16 - ((x + y)(x + y))

         = 16 - (x + y)^2

         = -(x + y)^2 + 16

         = -((x + y)^2 - 16))

         = -((x + y) + 4)((x + y)-4)

         = -(x + y + 4)(x + y - 4)

Hope this helps!
