In order to factorise an algebraic expression we have two methods :

  • Using Algebraic Identities
  • Splitting the middle term.

Here , we are gonna use the second method !!

Solution :

 \mathtt{ {x}^{2}  - 5x - 6} \\  \mathtt{ {x}^{2}  - 6x + 1x - 6} \\  \mathtt{x(x - 6)  + 1(x - 6)} \\ \mathtt{(x - 6)(x + 1)}

Additional Information :

  • In order to factorise x² + bx + c we have to find numbers p and q which are factors of c and even p + q = b or p - q = b
  • After finding p and q we just split the middle term as px and qx and find the required the terms needed !!
