Hi there

Your answer is :-

2y + y^2 - 2y - 1 = 0

y^2 - 1 = 0

 ( y - 1 ) \times ( y + 1 ) = 0

 y - 1 = 0\:,\:y + 1 = 0

 y = 1\: ,\: y = - 1

Thank You

2y  + {y}^{2}  - 2y - 1 \\  =  {y}^{2}  - 1  \\  =  {y}^{2} -  {1}^{2}   \:  \: \\  using \: identity \:  =  >  {a }^{2}  -  {b}^{2}  = (a + b)(a - b) \\ =  (y + 1)(y - 1)
