Using the identity: a² - b² = (a+b)(a-b)

(l+m)² - (l-m)²

= [(l+m)+(l-m)]×[(l+m)-(l-m)]

= [l+m+l-m]×[l+m-l+m]

= [2l]×[2m]

=4lm
