factorise x square - 11 x + 10 find x such that log x
whole square minus 11 log x + 10 is equal to zero

The final step is just basic logarithmic knowledge, i.e., log 10 = 1, log 1 = 0, assuming base to be 10 by default.

zeborg: That is the quadratic formula, -b+-b²-4ac whole divided by 2a, where a is the coefficient of (logx)², b is the coefficient of logx and c is the constant term, which is 10 in this case
