Answer:

Here,

When we put x = -1, (-1)³ - 10×(-1)² - 53 × (-1) -42 = -1 - 10 +53 - 42 = 0

So, (x+1) is a factor.

x³ - 10x² - 53x - 42 = x³ +x² - 11x² - 11x - 42x - 42

= x² (x+1) -11x (x+1) -42(x+1)

= (x+1) (x² - 11x - 42)

= (x+1) (x - 14)(x +3)

The same problem can be done by using factor theorem and synthetic division. The above process is the simplest and called zero factor method.
