by putting 1 in X

x^3 - x^2 + ax + x - a - 1

=(1) - (1) + a + 1 - a - 1

=0

then, (x-1) is a factor of equation

now, by dividing eq by (x-1) we get

x^2 + a + 1

by quadratic equation formula

X = (-a + √a^2 - 4)/2 , (-a - √a^2 - 4)/2
