here,a=1,b= -1,c= -4

Therefore,

x =  \frac{ - b + or -  \sqrt{b^{2}  - 4ac} }{2a}

 \:  \:  \:   =   \frac{ - 1 + or -  \sqrt{( - 1)^{2}  - 4( - 4)} }{2}

 \:  \:  \:  =  \frac{ - 1 + or -  \sqrt{1  + 16} }{2}

 \:  \:  \:  =   \frac{ - 1 + or -  \sqrt{17} }{2}
