Question :

  • Factorize : a² + a - 20

Solution :

⇒ a² + a - 20

By splitting middle term

⇒ a² + 5a - 4a - 20

⇒ a ( a + 5 ) - 4 ( a + 5 )

⇒ ( a - 4 ) ( a + 5 )

To Find value of a

⇒ ( a - 4 ) ( a + 5 ) = 0

When a - 4 = 0

⇒ a = 4

When a + 5 = 0

⇒ a = - 5
