Hi ,

Let f( y ) = y³ -7y + 6

1 ) if y = 2

f ( 2 ) = 2³ - 7 × 2 + 6

= 8 - 14 + 6

= 0

f( 2 ) = 0

therefore ,

y - 2 is the factor of f ( y ).

2 )

y - 2 ) y³ + 0 - 7y + 6 ( y³ + 2y - 3

y³ - 2y²
_____________
2y² - 7y

2y² - 4y
_______________
- 3y + 6

- 3y + 6

________________
0

f( y ) = ( y - 2 ) ( y² + 2y - 3 )

= ( y -2 ) ( y² - 1y + 3y - 3 )

= ( y - 2 ) [ y ( y - 1 ) + 3 ( y - 1 ) ]

= ( y -2 ) ( y - 1 ) ( y + 3 )

I hope this helps you.
