x³ - x² - x +1

taking x² common from x³ and x²,

= x²(x-1)-x+1

taking -1 common from -x and +1,

= x²(x-1)-1(x-1)

=(x-1)(x²-1)

By identity a² -b² = (a+b)(a-b)

we get (x-1)(x-1)(x+1)
