Solution :
( a - 8 )² - 4a = 0
By using identity
( a - b )² = a² - 2ab + b²
a² - 2 * a * 8 + 8² - 4a = 0
a² - 16a + 64 - 4a = 0
a² - 20a + 64 = 0
By splitting middle term
a² - 16a - 4a + 64 = 0
a ( a - 16 ) - 4 ( a - 16 ) = 0
( a - 4 ) ( a - 16 ) = 0
a - 4 = 0
a = 4
a - 16 = 0
a = 16
