Factors Affecting Solubility
The solubility of solids in water or any other
liquid depends on many factors. Two main
factors that affect the solubility of solids in
liquids are:
1. Temperature: If a saturated solution of a solid
in liquid is heated, more solute can usually be
dissolved in it. This is because solutions are
formed by particles of the solute occupying
the space between the particles of the solvent
(Fig. 8). The space between particles of the
liquid increases when the liquid is heated, so
a greater amount of solute can dissolve in the
liquid solvent. The reverse happens when a
liquid is cooled. Less solute can be dissolved
in the liquid solvent.
2. Particle size: The smaller the particles of
the solute, the faster they dissolve in the
solvent. Stirring and shaking helps break
up large clumps of solute which allows the
loose particles of the solute to dissolve more

The most common examples of dissolving involve a solid and a liquid, usually water. ... If a solid dissolves on mixing its particles break apart and form a loose association with the liquid (solvent) particles. A solid will not dissolve in a liquid if its particles are unable to form links to the liquid particles.
