The solution is −1±−3√4 (suppose we know what we mean here by −3−−−√).

Then the expansion would be

4x2+2x+1=4(x−−1+−3−−−√4)(x−−1−−3−−−√4)=4(x−1−1−−3−−−√)(x−1−1+−3−−−√)=[−1+(−1−−3−−−√)x][−1+(−1+−3−−−√)x]=[1−(−1−−3−−−√)x][1−(−1+−3−−−√)x] as written in the lecture note.

Note that here we've used the fact that (−1+−3−−−√)(−1−−3−−−√)=4.

(Thus −1+−3√4=1−1−−3√

And

−1−−3√4=1−1+−3√)
