Underwater volcanic eruptions and landslides can also generate tsunamis. In the deep ocean, their length from wave crest to wavecrest may be a hundred miles or more but with a wave height of only a few feet or less. They cannot be felt aboard ships nor can they be seen from the air in the open ocean.

factors responsible for speed of waves in a Tsunami are as follows:-
-on the shallowness of coast and vastness of water bodies
-Primary factor for the formation of this waves at coast are Winds
-The distance traveled by the wind without changing its direction.
-Area covered by the uninterrupted wind over the open water surface.
-The time duration over which the wind has blown over a given area.
-Tides are also important factor
-earth quake
- tremors
- volcano eruption inside ocean
-Also the gravitational pull of the moon(tides) is responsible for the formation of the waves.
