Matter exists in 4 states: solid, liquid, gas and plasma.

Different substances change from one form to the other at different temperatures and pressures.

For example water changes from solid to liquid above 0 degrees Celsius. Water boils and turns to steam over 100 degrees.

Hydrogen on the other hand is a gas even at very low temperatures. In order for hydrogen to become a solid even lower temperatures are required. Hydrogen is the major component of the Sun.

In the Sun hydrogen exists in plasma state because of the high temperature.

▶QUESTION:- Factors that causes matter to change its state?

___________________________________________

▶ANSWER:- It is important to understand what factors affect the chemical and physical changes of matter.  Physical changes are about energy and states of matter.  They can be seen and measured.  Physical changes are caused by forces like motion, temperature, and pressure.  Chemical changes happen on a much smaller level.  Most of these changes between molecules are unseen.  Factors that affect the rate of chemical changes include: temperature, concentration, surface area, inhibitors, and catalysts.  Here are some examples of how these factors affect chemical and physical changes.

Temperature affects the chemical change of matter.  If you increase temperature, you increase the reaction rate and vice versa.  A decrease or increase in temperature means fewer or more particles will have the activation energy.  Burning a sugar cube causes a chemical change as the fire breaks down the chemical bonds.

Secondly, concentration affects the chemical change of matter.  If you increase the concentration, you increase the number of particles of a substance per unit of volume and vice versa.  Therefore, particles collide more frequently and the rate of reaction increases.  A greater concentration means more particles have a greater chance to collide with one another.

Next, surface area also affects the chemical change of matter.  You will see this when you decrease the surface area.  The result is that you decrease the rate of reaction.  The opposite also holds true.  A finely divided powder reacts quicker than the same stuff in a large clump.

An inhibitor is a fourth factor in affecting the chemical change of matter.  An inhibitor is a substance that slows down the chemical reaction when added.  It is a type of effecter that decreases or prevents a chemical reaction.  They are often called negative catalysts.

A catalyst is another factor that affects the chemical change of matter.  Catalysts speed up the chemical reaction when added.  A catalyst works by changing the energy pathway for a chemical reaction; it provides a route that lowers the activation energy so more particles can undergo a successful collision.

Lastly, solubility affects the physical change of matter.  If something is very soluble it changes its physical appearance faster.  Solubility is the ability of the solvent to dissolve the solute.  Salt is very soluble in water.

Each of these factors affects either the chemical or physical changes of matter.  It is important to be able to tell the difference between the two types of changes and to know how these factors affect the rate of change in matter.
