The Cheraman Juma Mosque is a mosque in Methala, Kodungallur Taluk, Thrissur Districtin the Indian state of Kerala.[1][2][3] Built in 629 AD, it is the first mosque in India.[4][5][6] It was built by Malik Deenar, an Arab propagator of Islam.[7][8][9][10] It is believed that this mosque was first renovated and reconstructed in the 11th century AD. Many non-Muslims conduct initiation ceremonies to the world of letters of their children here
Cheraman Perumal, the reigning King of Chera dynasty of Kerala, with Kodungallur as its capital, met a group of Arab traders who convinced him to meet Prophet at Mecca. He divided his small kingdom among his relatives and followers. He then left for Mecca, met the prophet, embraced Islam and changed his name to Tajjudin. While returning home, fell ill and died at Dhufar in Oman. Before his death, he sent letters with Malik Ibn Dinar to his relatives in Kerala, asking them to be courteous to the latter. Malik Bin Dinar and his companions reached Kodungallur and handed over the letters to the ruling chieftains. They were given permission to construct mosques in different places. A defunct Buddha vihar near Kodungallur was handed over to convert it to a mosque. The first mosque in India was thus constructed near Kodungallur and Malik Bin Dinar himself was the first Ghazi of this "Cheraman Masjid". After a while he appointed his relative Habib Bin Malik as the Ghazi at Cheraman Masjid and traveled across the length and breadth of Kerala. He established different Mosques in different parts of Kerala. Later, he left for Arabia where he died. It is believed that the old tombs now at Cheraman Mosque belong to Habib Bin Malik and his wife Khumarriah. The masjid is has been renovated several times in the past 1300 years. Cheraman Mosque is unique in the world in many ways. Mosques all over the world face the direction of Mecca, but Cheraman Juma Masjid faces east. Women are not allowed into the mosque. Cheraman mosque uses a traditional brass oil lamp, a Hindu temple tradition.
