The Sepoy Mutiny or the First War of Independence was one of the first protests against british rule. It was sparked when Mangal Pandey, shot a general at Barrackpore. This was due to the greasing of bullets with animal fat, mainly pigs or cows. Cows are holy to Hindus and Pigs are unclean to Muslims, so both religions broke out a conflict against the British. This was not spread across country, it was only around the Northern Parts of India. Queen Victoria officially announced complete British Rule after this.
