In order to open a Savings Bank Account, one must carry with him or her 2 copies of his or her passport-size colour photograph, original and photocopies of documents proving his or her address and identity. In case for proof of identity the person carries a document other than his or her IT PAN CARD, then this card and a photocopy of it must be taken along. Sometimes, Banks require an existing account holder as an introducer.
The Banks have detailed lists of documents which are acceptable as address and identity proofs. All them are as per Reserve Bank of India or Government of India guidelines and are generally photo-bearing documents issued by the Government.
