The comical-looking Dodo is probably the first thing people think of when
they are asked about the wildlife of Mauritius and, as everyone knows that
unfortunate, flightless bird became famously extinct within a few decades
of European settlement.
Not only were they ridiculously easy to catch for the pot, but rats
introduced from the settlers' boats soon devoured the eggs and young of
the rotund, hapless bird - and rats, mice, shrews and mongooses are still
a major threat to Mauritian wildlife today.
Because Mauritius was a completely uninhabited island, untouched by
humans and floating in the middle of the Indian Ocean for so long. It is
not surprising that there are numerous creatures found there that aust
nowhere else in the world. Many of them met the same fate as the poor
Dodo and others came very, very close, but hard-working people with
incredible foresight saved them from extinction.
