Geological factors play an important role in the construction of civil engineering structures. A few failures have occurred due to lack of knowledge or negligence. There are many incidences of the destruction of structures due to civil engineering failures. A few are -
1. The leaning tower of Pisa - It is Italy, also known as the Bell Tower. It was first built in 1173 and after 2 long breaks, it was completed in 1360. The unstable soil material has caused the heavy tower to sink up to 30 - 40 cm on one side.
2. The collapse of the St. Francis Dam, which was a curved concrete gravity dam in Los Angeles during the 1920s. The lack of instrumentation knowledge and geological findings led to the collapse of this dam.
3. The collapse of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge - In 1940, this narrow, graceful suspension bridge was built to connect the Kitsap Peninsula with Tacoma, Washington. The bridge collapsed within 4 months of opening due to civil engineering failures.
