Fusion of male gamet(sperm) and female gamet(ovum) is known an fertilisation. If the ovum does not fuse with sperm then the fertilisation does not occur and this ovum expels out through vagina with some blood. This is known as menstruation. Hence failure of fertilisation leads to menstruation.
