Famer in the medieval age had to pay almost half their produe to the rular as tax.Why did they have to pay this ?

As a revenue they had to pay this to the headmen as they provide security in return to the farmer's crops.This revenue was further reached to the royal treasure.Thus the king may use it for their and the armies consumption.Therefore they had to pay half of their gross produce...
